You can have your pet’s DNA infused into a certified diamond using about five grams of their ashes, or fur and whiskers with the root still attached. The infusion takes about an hour, and you can do it yourself in our lab or watch by video.
For many people a dog, cat or rabbit was family. Here is how a diamond can keep them close.
What you can use
- Cremated remains: about a teaspoon (5 g)
- Fur: a small tuft, ideally brushed or plucked so the root follicle comes with it
- Whiskers: naturally shed whiskers often have the root attached
- Something else? Send us a photo and we will tell you if it is suitable before you part with it
The root matters. DNA sits in the follicle at the base of a hair, not in the cut shaft. Fur saved from a groomer’s trim usually has no roots; fur from a brush or shed whiskers often does.
Can I do this while my pet is still alive?
Yes. Some owners collect shed whiskers and brushed fur during their pet’s life and create the diamond as a celebration rather than a memorial. Others keep the fur safely until the time comes. Store it dry, in a sealed paper envelope, away from heat and sunlight.
How the day works
- A conversation about your pet and the kind of piece you want
- Choosing the diamond: shape, carat and colour
- Secure collection and purification of the material
- The infusion: about an hour, with you in the lab or on a private video call
- Presentation: your diamond engraved with an inscription you choose, its GIA or IGI certificate, a DNA Origin Certificate, a blockchain registration and a short keepsake film
Choosing a stone for a pet
You might pick a colour that reminds you of your pet: a warm yellow or brown for a golden retriever, a deep blue for a calm old cat, or classic white. Pendants and charms work well because they can be worn every day.
Pet ashes diamonds vs other keepsakes
| Keepsake | What it keeps | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Urn at home | All the ashes | Stays in one place |
| Paw print or fur locket | An impression or a little fur | Can fade or wear |
| DNA-infused diamond | Your pet’s DNA in a certified diamond | Diamonds are the hardest natural material; it can be worn and passed down |
Frequently asked questions
How much pet fur do I need?
A small tuft, as long as the root follicle is attached. About five grams of ashes also works.
Can I use fur from the groomer?
Usually not, because clipped fur has no roots. Brushed fur or shed whiskers are better.
How long does it take?
The infusion takes about an hour and you can take the diamond home the same day. A custom setting takes longer.
Can I be there?
Yes. You can do the infusion yourself in the lab or watch by private video.
