A DNA-infused diamond is a certified lab-grown diamond that has DNA from a loved one’s ashes, hair or fur infused into it. At Eternal Diamonds the infusion itself takes about an hour, you can be in the lab while it happens, and you take the diamond home the same day.
This guide explains how it works, what you need to bring, how it compares with having a diamond grown from ashes, and the questions worth asking any provider before you hand over something irreplaceable.
Why families in Singapore are choosing diamonds
Around eight in ten deaths in Singapore end in cremation (80.5% in 2018, according to the Cremation Society of Great Britain). Most families then face the same question: where should the ashes rest? A columbarium niche, sea burial and an urn at home are the usual answers. A diamond is a newer one, for families who want something they can wear, hold and pass down rather than visit.
It is not only for loss. Families also mark births, marriages and milestones with a diamond carrying the DNA of the people involved, and pet owners create one for a dog, cat or other companion.
What is a DNA-infused diamond?
It starts as a real diamond: a lab-grown stone with the same crystal structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined diamond, graded independently by GIA or IGI. You choose the shape, carat and colour before anything else happens.
Material from the person or pet you are honouring is then prepared, purified and infused into that diamond using our proprietary FUSION process, which uses advanced plasma technology. The result is a certified diamond that carries their DNA.
One thing to be clear about: the GIA or IGI certificate grades the diamond itself (cut, colour, clarity, carat). It does not certify the infusion. That is what your DNA Origin Certificate, issued by an accredited laboratory, is for.
How the process works, step by step
- Confidential conversation. You tell us who the diamond is for and what it should mean. Nothing has to be decided yet.
- Choose your diamond. Cut, shape, carat and colour, plus a jewellery design if you want one. Every stone is GIA or IGI certified.
- DNA capture. We collect your material securely and keep it traceable from collection to the lab. It is then purified so only the cleanest material is used.
- DNA infusion. Your purified DNA is infused into the diamond. This takes about an hour, and you can do it yourself in the lab or watch through a private video session.
- Presentation. The diamond is engraved with an inscription you choose, registered on a blockchain record that cannot be altered, and handed to you in a presentation box with its GIA or IGI certificate, DNA Origin Certificate, provenance documents and a short keepsake film of the day.
What material do you need, and how much?
About five grams, which is roughly a teaspoon of ashes or a lock of hair. We can work with:
- Cremated remains (human or pet)
- Hair with the root follicle attached
- Pet fur or whiskers with the root follicle attached
- Other organic material: send us a photo and we will tell you if it is suitable before you part with anything
The material is used in full during the process, so we always suggest sending only what you can bear to part with, never everything you have.
How long does it take?
The infusion takes about an hour and the diamond is yours the same day. If you choose a ring, pendant or other setting, the jeweller needs extra time; we give you a timeline once the design is agreed.
That is the biggest practical difference from diamonds grown from ashes, which usually take months. The comparison below covers the rest.
DNA-infused or grown from ashes?
There are two ways to put a loved one into a diamond, and both are legitimate. Which suits you depends on what matters most.
| DNA-infused (Eternal Diamonds) | Grown from ashes (typical provider) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | DNA is infused into a certified lab-grown diamond | Carbon is extracted from the remains and grown into a new diamond |
| Time | About an hour; same day | Usually several months |
| Material needed | About 5 g | Often 200 g of ashes or 10 g of hair |
| Choice of stone | You choose exact cut, carat and colour first | Size and colour ordered up front; growing time depends on both |
| Can you be there? | Yes, in the lab or by video | Usually no |
We go through this in detail in our side-by-side comparison (DNA-Infused vs Grown-From-Ashes Diamonds: What’s the Difference?).
Can I be present?
Yes. You are invited into the lab to infuse the DNA into the diamond yourself and watch the process. If you cannot travel, we arrange a private video session and handle the secure transfer of your material.
What does it cost?
The price depends on the diamond you choose (carat, colour, cut) and the design of the finished piece. We give each family a personal quotation after the first conversation. Our cost guide explains what drives the price and what to compare between providers (How Much Does a Diamond Made from Ashes Cost in Singapore?).
Questions to ask any provider
- Who grades the diamond, and can I verify the certificate number myself?
- What does the grading certificate cover, and what proves the DNA is in this particular stone?
- How is my material labelled, tracked and stored between collection and the lab?
- What happens if something goes wrong? Will I be told straight away?
- Can I be there, or see it happen?
- How long will it really take, including any setting?

Frequently asked questions
Is a DNA-infused diamond a real diamond?
Yes. It is a lab-grown diamond with the same crystal structure, hardness and brilliance as a mined stone, graded independently by GIA or IGI.
Is my loved one really in the diamond?
Yes. Our FUSION process infuses DNA from the material you bring into the diamond, and you can take part in the infusion yourself.
How long does it take to turn ashes into a diamond?
With DNA infusion, about an hour, and you take the diamond home the same day. A custom jewellery setting takes longer.
How much ash do I need?
About five grams, roughly a teaspoon. A lock of hair with the root attached also works.
How do I know the diamond really carries their DNA?
Each diamond comes with a DNA Origin Certificate from an accredited laboratory, is engraved with an inscription you choose, and is registered on a blockchain record that cannot be altered.
